Chain Letter

I never paid much attention

to any act of snobbery

until the day came and I found myself

at the mercy of poverty.

The friends that I had

disappeared from view

and if plans were made,

they would always fall through.

The talk behind my back was

that I was at fault for my situation,

this premise was born

due to unreliable information.

They never took the time

to ascertain the facts

before they commenced

with their personal attacks.

Looking down on me they thought

themselves much better,

spreading falsehoods

about me like a chain letter,

while I prayed for grace

not to retaliate,

I wondered how easily

friendship could turn to hate.
