Wool jumper has been
taken from a drawer,
warm coat has been hung
on the back of the door.
Summer has gone and
the days are getting colder,
another winter to come
and another year to get older.
Wood has been stacked
ready for the fire,
chairs have been moved
to make way for the clothes dryer.
Windows and doors have been
checked for draughts,
while the old chimney has been
blocked to prevent a down-draught.
I look around satisfied
that everything’s prepared
in this small house that we use to share.
