Skimming Stones

Skimming stones across

the surface of the sea,

children run around me

with the excitement of being free.

I search for the

flattest stone I can find

when all of a sudden

your face appears in my mind.

Frozen for a moment

while I try to understand why,

for it has been decades

since we last said goodbye.

I stare at the sea

as if it held the answer

then a wave brushes my feet

and makes me move

like an awkward dancer.

My shoes are now soaked,

and I shake my head

smiling to myself over

a memory I thought long dead.

I reach down and

pick up another stone,

skim it over the water

while wondering are

you all on your own.
