Holy Shit- Holy crap !

Holy shit ! Holy crap ! , swear words

Why the word ‘Holy‘ is used ,before swear words ?

Does not this go against the third commandment ?

Are we not demeaning the very Godly word ‘Holy’ ?

Readers can help me for a better understanding.

As a God fearing man I want an explanation.

Thank you.   Philosophy through photography

    1. Yeh,not sure what is the logic, and why should they mix the word ‘holy’ with ‘rubbish’

  2. The inventor of these curses might have thought of themselves as really creative with language.

  3. Holy or wholly. Holy implies that it is without form, a high spiritual ideal. So I like to say “unholy” to separate my intentions and stuff from fucking “god” or whatever. But with the silent w at the start, it indicates that something is complete in form. It’s not just an idea, but it is manifest.

    1. Thank you Orvillewrong,U don’t understand in the first place why should anyone mix the word ‘ Holy’ to ‘swear words’, defeating the very essence of usage of the word ‘Holy’

  5. To use the word holy as almost a prefix is to soften what used to be called blasphemy a few centuries ago : hence O shit – became Holy shit which somehow made it right. But we have to remember that 3 and 4 hundred years ago they were also afraid of vampires.

  6. It is the most troubling of oxymoronic speech-. Every language seems to have its share of profanity and coarseness, but American English has a premium on conflating the profane with the sacred.

  7. We usually associate the term Holy with for clearly only The God is Holy…As.you.told it’s clearly mentioned in the Bible it’s a sin taking his name in vain.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain” (KJV; also “You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God” (NRSV) and variants) is the fourth of God’s Ten Commandments to man.

It is a prohibition of blasphemy, specifically, the misuse or “taking in vain” of the name of the God of Israel, or using His name to commit evil. Exodus 20:7 reads:

“Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” (KJV).
With the same mouth we say
    Holy…Holy… Holy are you Lord
And we prefix the same Holy to unholy things.. .
Are we becoming worse than Sodom and Gomorrah?…
